SUMMARY:Art exhibition: Sally Gunn
DESCRIPTION:Trained at the world- renowned Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee\, Sally works mainly in watercolours and acrylics\, but also with textiles\, producing hand-painted silk scarves and hangings. \nWith a unique and colourful style\, her favourite subjects include coastal\, beach and mountain scenes\, and also woodland\, buildings and boats. Much of her artistic inspiration comes from the beautiful scenery and old townscapes of Scotland\, especially around the Moray Firth\, the North West Coast\, and Fife\, but also from two years living in Norway\, painting the rugged mountain and fjord scenery\, and colourful Norwegian buildings. \nWhilst many of her works have been sold direct to buyers or were specially commissioned\, Sally has shown and sold her art in galleries and other venues in London\, Stavanger and around the north of Scotland\, including Logie Steading\, the Nairn Book and Arts Festival\, a solo exhibition in Forres\, and Boath House Hotel. \nSally’s originals and limited-edition signed prints have often gone to overseas buyers\, and she has an extensive range of fine-art cards featuring scenes taken from her originals. She also offers art tuition in her studio in Auldearn. \nFor more information go to www.sallygunnart.co.uk or @sallygunnart on Facebook.

SUMMARY:Alanda Calmus at Logie Steading Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Alanda Calmus\, b.1974\, is a contemporary artist. Mostly self taught\, there is almost no subject that she hasn’t tackled at some point in her career from wildlife and portraits to landscapes and seascapes. \nTrained initially as a graphic designer and illustrator\, she took up commissioned portrait painting in 2002. For the last few years she has focussed more on painting wildlife\, particularly that found in Scotland. \nWorking from a studio at her home in Fochabers\, she continues to develop her own distinctive style and is evolving as a more expressive\, intuitive artist. \nHer paintings express her attention to detail whilst also allowing a certain creative freedom that brings a unique twist to each piece of artwork. \nSome paintings are more traditional in style\, painted using acrylic\, oil\, pastel or watercolour and other works combine these media in a more modern approach\, either pairing pastel with watercolour or acrylic with oil. \nAlanda’s artwork has been displayed in numerous solo and group shows and has been acquired and commissioned by collectors across the UK and in the US\, Canada\, Australia\, and Europe.

SUMMARY:Down to RAW : Deborah Hay : live screening & talk
DESCRIPTION:Continuing a 20 year collaborative partnership\, Independent Dance and Dance North have joined forces this autumn to bring you Down to RAW\, a collection of work by Deborah Hay from 1968 to the present. \nIn addition to this online programme\, we will be presenting a live screening simultaneously in Findhorn and London\, with Deborah Hay joining us from Austin\, Texas. \nThis offers a rare opportunity to come together as two communities in parallel to listen to and be in dialogue with Deborah Hay\, an artist who has spent five decades at the vanguard of choreographic experimentation\, helping to re-define the field of dance with her revolutionary work and influential publications. Prior to Deborah’s talk we will show two short films from her Down to RAW collection: \nAlignment is everywhere (2019\, 20min)\nAlignment is everywhere is an intimate portrait of Deborah Hay by filmmaker Peter\nHumble and interviewer David Young. It was shot in in Melbourne on a 16mm hand-cranked camera using expired and hand-processed film stock. Premiered at Berlin’s Tanz Im August (2019) and since shown in various venues.\nmy choreographed body… revisited (2019\, 20min) \nFor 50 years Hay has gradually been enlarging her practice of movement and\nperformance through her own body-based experiments. In this recorded solo she pays\ntribute to this wealth of experience and for the first time she performs without\nthe compositional edifice that previously determined one solo from another.\nRecorded in 2019 in the context of Tanz Im August / RE-Perspective Deborah Hay: Works\nfrom 1968 to the present\, Berlin\, Germany \nDeborah Hay\nChoreographer/performer Deborah Hay began her career in the early 1960s with the Judson Dance Theatre. In her five decades at the vanguard of choreographic experimentation\, she has helped re-define the field of dance with her revolutionary work and influential publications\, in particular Lamb at the Altar\, Duke University Press\, and My Body\, the Buddhist\, Wesleyan University Press\, and most recently a 2019 expanded edition of Using the Sky\, Wesleyan University Press. \nSince the 1960s Hay has researched new approaches to choreography\, pairing unique forms of creative scoring with her distinct modes of practice and adaptation. Recent recognition of her work include an Honorary Doctorate from the Theater Academy in Helsinki 2009. In 2012 she received an inaugural Doris Duke Artists Award. In May 2015 the Minister of Culture and Communication awarded Hay the title of Chevalier De L’ordre des arts et des Lettres. In August 2019\, Berlin’s Tanz Im August presented a month long RE-Perspective of her work. The Cullberg Company will premiere Hay’s latest work Horse\, the solos\, in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, August 21\, 2020. \nThe Down to RAW collection consists of three documentaries featuring conversations with Deborah Hay including an interview with Jeanine Durning. A further four videos are of performances of choreographed works made between 1968 and the present. These include works shown at MoMA’s Judson Dance Theatre installation as well as solos performed by Eva Mohn\, Ros Warby and Deborah Hay. \nThis unique collection of seven films will be available online for two weeks\, from 4 – 17 October. The full list of films can be seen at: https://independentdance.co.uk/event/down-to-raw-deborah-hay-now-online-films/ \nIf it’s more practical for you\, geographically\, to attend the live screening & talk event with Independent Dance at Siobhan Davies Studios in London\, you can find booking information here. \nImage: My choreographed body… revisited | Photo: Camille Blake 2019 of Deborah Hay

SUMMARY:Limekiln Woods\, Findhorn River & Loch of Blairs (Circuit)
DESCRIPTION:This is a varied and motivating walk with a variety of trees and plant life using informal woodland paths high above the River Findhorn and gorge with dramatic views of the rushing water below. The loch is a haven for birdlife and a popular walking venue for people. The Friends of Blairs Loch (FBL) a group of industrious volunteers who are working hard to restore the loch back to its former glory and to the community as an amenity for recreation and educational purposes will be at hand on the day. \nJoin enthusiastic walker Elaine Crowe for a varied and motivating walk of two halves\, the first half takes us through Limekiln Woods and a section of the Findhorn River. There is a variety of wildlife to be seen and many varieties of trees and plant life to observe (the colours reflecting the time and season of the year). The informal and dramatic woodland paths high above the swirling waters of the River Findhorn and its gorge provide dramatic glimpses of the river below. The steep cliff edge is unprotected\, but there are excellent views of the rushing waters below. The water is often dark brown\, coloured by the peat of the Monadhliath Mountains where it rises and flows from. \nWe then continue onto Loch of Blairs which again has many varieties of trees and plant life. The Loch is approximately 11 hectares in area and sits in the north-western area of Altyre Estate\, lying close to the town of Forres in Moray. Once used as a trout fishery by anglers in the area the availability of boat hire ceased around 15 years ago. The costs of ongoing maintenance became too high for The Moray Council and they ended their involvement with the loch in the early 2000’s. As a result\, the boathouse\, bothy\, stables and cart building fell into disrepair and the loch sat quietly in its surroundings becoming sadly neglected and overgrown with Rhododendrons\, Phragmites Reeds and dense aquatic weeds. However\, The Friends of Blairs Loch (FBL) are a group of industrious volunteers who are working hard to restore the loch back to its former glory and to the community as an amenity for recreation and educational purposes. Although the work is ongoing the volunteers are working towards reopening the water at Loch of Blairs for trout fishing. Both the bothy and boathouse have been refurbished and a wonderful new outdoor learning venue has replaced the old stable and cart block. In addition\, the Rhododendrons and other tenacious plant life have been cleared to extend the footpath network around the loch and open up the panoramic views to the loch. The loch has been made even more appealing with the addition of three bird hides built by volunteers on the water’s edge\, connecting bridges\, benches and picnic tables. It remains a haven for birdlife and a popular walking venue for “those in the know”. \nThank you to Elaine\, who is donating the profits of this event to the Moray Way Association

SUMMARY:Nature Writing Coastal Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The coast provides lots of inspiration for your nature writing. This route involves a gentle stroll and nature writing workshop along Burghead’s beautiful coastline. \nThe natural world is an endless source of inspiration for wildlife writer and photographer Rebecca Gibson. Join her as she walks part of the Moray Coast Trail from Burghead to Cummingston and back. \nThis three-hour event will involve a leisurely stroll along the coast path\, keeping an eye out for any passing wildlife both in the fields and out at sea. Participants will be encouraged to notice not just the sights but also the sounds\, textures and smells of their surroundings. Nature writing is most immersive when it involves all the senses. \nDuring the walk there will be a nature writing workshop\, using crashing waves\, chittering stonechats and prickly gorse as sensory prompts. If anyone has any questions for Rebecca about writing or wildlife\, she’d be happy to answer them. Participants can read out what they’ve written if they’d like to\, but there’s absolutely no pressure to share. Afterwards\, the group will make their way back along the coast path to the car park\, hopefully feeling refreshed and inspired.
